Chapter 7
The Spark Ignites
Maya's project triumphs, proving heroes are timeless. Her classmates gain new respect for Angela Davis, and Maya realizes she's helped reignite a vital legacy for her generation.
Maya stood before the buzzing classroom, her heart thrumming a rhythm that felt both exciting and a little wobbly, like a kite catching a sudden gust of wind. Around her, the usual chatter of her classmates seemed to soften, replaced by a hum of anticipation. Liam, sitting in the front row, gave her a quick, almost imperceptible nod, his usual competitive smirk replaced by a flicker of curiosity. Chloe, perched on the edge of her seat, offered a wide, encouraging smile, her fingers already fiddling with the colored pencils she’d brought for Maya’s presentation. Mr. Harrison, their teacher, leaned forward, his gaze steady and kind, a silent invitation for Maya to begin.
Maya took a deep breath, the scent of paper and crayons and the faint, comforting smell of her grandmother’s lavender sachet filling her lungs. “We’ve all been talking about heroes,” Maya began, her voice clear and surprisingly steady. “Heroes who do amazing things, who change the world. Liam showed us how the first astronauts walked on the moon, and Chloe… Chloe’s art showed us how scientists are finding new ways to heal our planet.” She paused, her eyes sweeping across the faces of her classmates. “And some people thought maybe… maybe Angela Davis was just a story from a long, long time ago. Someone who fought battles that were already won.”
