Chapter 16
The Weight of Expectation
Maya feels the immense pressure of being a public voice. She struggles with imposter syndrome, questioning if she can truly live up to the legacy she champions.
Maya clutched the worn edges of the book, its pages filled with words that felt both ancient and brand new. They were Angela Davis’s words, her voice, echoing across decades, but now they were Maya’s to carry. The "Heroes of Change" project loomed, a bright, boisterous affair that usually involved shiny posters and enthusiastic, if sometimes shallow, pronouncements. This year, however, a different kind of buzz filled the classroom, a hum of polite dismissal whenever Angela Davis’s name arose. Liam, with his confident smirk and even more confident ideas, had already declared his intention to champion a new wave of digital influencers, their faces plastered across screens, their messages fleeting but flashy.
"She's... complicated," Chloe had whispered to Maya, her brow furrowed as she sketched in her notebook, the lines of a bold, defiant fist emerging from the page. "And maybe a little sad."

But a cold knot began to form in Maya’s stomach. Chloe wasn't wrong. The world outside their classroom, the world they were meant to change, felt impossibly large and daunting. Could she, Maya, a girl who sometimes tripped over her own feet and forgot her lines in school plays, truly be a voice for someone like Angela Davis?
