Chapter 13
The Digital Divide
Disinformation campaigns target Angela Davis's legacy online. Maya and her group fight back, using digital tools to counter falsehoods and amplify authentic narratives.
Maya traced the worn edges of the digital tablet, her brow furrowed. The screen glowed with an angry red, a stark contrast to the warm, comforting glow of her grandmother's old books. It was Chapter 13, and the title itself felt like a punch: "The Digital Divide." Her classmates, Liam and his friends, had been buzzing about it all week, their voices a low hum of gossip and intrigue. They’d found it in a hidden corner of the school’s online archives, a place Mr. Harrison had warned them about, filled with unfiltered, often misleading, information.
"It's all lies, Maya," Liam had scoffed, leaning over her shoulder during recess. "They're trying to make Angela Davis look… I don't know, scary. Like she was always yelling and causing trouble." He pointed a finger at a distorted image, a caricature of Angela with wild hair and a grimace. "See? This is what they want everyone to think. Not the real stuff."
Maya felt a familiar knot tighten in her stomach. It was the same feeling she’d had when her classmates first dismissed Angela Davis as "old news." It was the feeling of injustice, of stories being twisted and silenced. She remembered Grandma Elena’s stories, the quiet strength in her voice when she spoke of Angela’s courage, her unwavering belief in fairness. How could someone so powerful be made to look so small, so wrong, by a few angry words on a screen?
