The air in Haverford, always thick with the promise of rain and the stench of industry, now carried a new, unsettling scent: the brine of the sea mixed with the sharp, metallic tang of ambition. It was the scent of the Emerald Tide, and it was rising. Martin O’Connell, his jaw set like granite, his eyes the colour of a stormy Irish sky, had made his move. The docks, the lifeblood of the city, were no longer exclusively the domain of Nikki “Legs” Moreno and his men. Whispers turned to shouts, shouts to the crackle of gunfire echoing through the warehouses.
Vinnie watched from the shadowed anonymity of a waterfront tavern, nursing a cheap whiskey that burned a familiar path down his throat. The news had spread like wildfire, carried on the tongues of dockworkers and whispered in hushed tones by those who knew the city’s underbelly. The Irish, long a simmering undercurrent, were now a visible, aggressive force, their green banners, crude but defiant, appearing on shipping containers, in alleyways, on the very doors of establishments that had once paid homage to the Italian syndicate.
Nikki, when Vinnie next saw him, was a coiled spring of contained fury. His usual easy charisma was strained, his smile a tight, dangerous line. They sat in Nikki’s opulent office, the mahogany desk gleaming under the soft lamplight, a stark contrast to the chaos brewing outside.
