The air in the inner sanctum of Nikki’s club was thick with the scent of cigar smoke, expensive cologne, and the metallic tang of unspoken threats. Vinnie Vincenzo, no longer the boy who’d stared into the abyss of his parents’ murder, stood straighter now, the weight of his new position settling on his shoulders like a bespoke suit. Tonight, he was being made. The whispers had been growing for months, a low hum beneath the city’s cacophony, and now, the crescendo was upon him.
Nikki, his face a roadmap of a life lived hard and fast, watched him with an unnerving stillness. His eyes, usually glinting with a predatory amusement, were now strangely contemplative. “You’ve done good, Vinnie,” he said, his voice a gravelly purr. “Sharp. Smart. You learned fast.” He gestured to the polished mahogany table, where a single, ornate dagger lay, its blade catching the dim light. “This,” Nikki continued, his gaze locking with Vinnie’s, “is the final test. And the first symbol of your new life.”
Vinnie’s hand trembled slightly as he reached for the dagger. It was heavier than it looked, the hilt cool against his palm. He remembered the flash of steel, the gurgle that had silenced his mother’s screams, the blood that had blossomed on the worn rug of their small apartment. Revenge. It had been a raw, burning ember that had guided his every step. Now, it felt like a distant memory, overshadowed by the intoxicating hum of power.
