The air in Level 10 was not cold, nor was it warm. It simply *was*. A stagnant, suffocating presence that clung to Zack’s skin like a shroud. He had expected a grand spectacle, a monstrous beast born of the maze’s deepest dread. Instead, he found… this. A chamber, vast and featureless, its walls the same sickly yellow as every other corridor he’d traversed. The silence was absolute, a void that swallowed sound before it could form. It was a silence that pressed in, not from the absence of noise, but from the overwhelming presence of *something* that chose not to speak.
He held his breath, straining his ears for the slightest whisper, the faintest creak. Nothing. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the oppressive quiet. He’d fought his way through the Architect’s illusions, evaded the Watcher’s unseen gaze, and been tormented by the Echo’s cruel reflections of his past. He’d reached the end. This had to be it. But what was this emptiness?
He took a hesitant step forward, the worn soles of his boots making no sound on the floor. He raised the cheap digital recorder, its red light a pathetic beacon in the gloom. “Hello?” he croaked, his voice sounding alien and thin. “Is anyone there?”
