The Mimic's Game
Copycat escalates its attacks, isolating Alex and Benji. It uses their friends and families against them, creating elaborate illusions and exploiting their trust in each other.
The afternoon sun, usually a welcome balm on the skin, felt oppressive, thick with an unspoken tension that clung to the humid air like a shroud. Alex sat on the curb outside Benji’s house, tossing a worn baseball from one hand to the other, the rhythmic thud a small anchor in the growing sea of unease. Benji’s front door remained shut, a silent testament to the unease that had settled over their street, over their town, like a persistent fog. It had started subtly, a misplaced object, a flicker of movement at the edge of vision. Then came the voices, disembodied whispers that mimicked loved ones, calling out from empty rooms, from the rustling leaves of the oak trees that lined the street.
“He’s not answering,” Alex said, his voice flat, the baseball’s impact against his palm a dull ache.
“He said he’d meet me,” Benji’s voice, small and tight, came from the open upstairs window. He leaned out, his face pale, eyes darting nervously down the street. “He *promised*.”
