The fluorescent hum of the police station was a familiar sound, a low thrum that usually settled Brody’s nerves. Tonight, it felt like a swarm of agitated insects trapped behind his eyeballs. He’d spent the last hour staring at a thick, manila folder, its edges softened by age and countless riflings. The ink on the reports was faded, the paper brittle, but the words still seared themselves into his mind. Ten years. It had been ten years since the Miller girl had vanished. Ten years since he’d told her parents it was a runaway, a teenage fling that had gone south, a story he’d spun from thin air and desperation.

He rubbed his temples, the skin rough and dry. He remembered the panic in Mrs. Miller’s eyes, the hollow ache in Mr. Miller’s voice as he’d pleaded for answers. Brody had offered platitudes, reassurances that the town would keep looking, that she’d turn up. He’d known, even then, that it was a lie. There had been… whispers. Strange things people had said, things he’d dismissed as grief-fueled hysteria. A shadow that moved too fast. A voice that sounded like the girl’s, but from the wrong direction. A fleeting glimpse of her, laughing, on the porch of the old abandoned cannery. He’d told himself it was the stress, the lack of sleep, the unshakeable feeling of dread that had settled over Blackwood Creek like a shroud.

He’d found no sign of struggle, no forced entry at the Miller house. Just an open window, a faint scent of something acrid, like ozone mixed with damp earth, and a silence that screamed louder than any alarm. The official report was a meticulously crafted narrative of a girl choosing to leave. But Brody had carried the weight of that unspoken truth, the gnawing suspicion that something far more sinister had occurred. He’d buried it, along with the unsettling details that didn’t fit, the witness accounts that were too bizarre to report. He’d chosen the easier lie, the one that allowed the town to sleep at night.
