Chapter 6
Benji's Doubt
Benji becomes convinced someone close to him is a Copycat. His anxiety spikes, and his loyalty to Alex wavers as fear takes hold. The creature preys on his deepest insecurities.
The screen door slammed shut behind Benji with a hollow thud, a sound that usually meant freedom, a rush of summer air, and the promise of Alex’s driveway. Today, it sounded like a trapdoor closing. The afternoon sun beat down, relentless, turning the asphalt into a shimmering mirage, but no heat seemed to reach Benji. A cold knot of dread had taken root in his stomach, a familiar sensation that had become a constant companion these past few weeks.

There had been a flicker, a brief, almost imperceptible shift in her gaze, like a reflection caught in a window that wasn't quite right. Or maybe he was imagining it. He was imagining a lot of things these days.
That was the problem. Everything was a question mark. Every shadow held a potential threat, every familiar face a mask. And the whispers, they were getting louder, no longer confined to hushed conversations at the grocery store or nervous glances across the schoolyard. They were seeping into his own home, into the very fabric of his life.
