The swing set in Willow Creek Park had always been a fixture of summer. Even now, with the cicadas buzzing their relentless song and the sun beating down with a midday ferocity, it stood, two empty swings swaying gently in a breeze that felt too thin to move them. Alex nudged a loose stone with the toe of his worn sneaker, the sound small against the vast, quiet expanse of the park. It had been a place of laughter, of scraped knees and endless games of tag, but lately, a stillness had settled over it, an unnerving silence that swallowed sound.

“You think… you think Mrs. Gable really saw him?” Benji’s voice was a hushed murmur, barely disturbing the air. He sat beside Alex on the splintered wooden bench, his fingers tracing the rough grain of the wood as if seeking some solid truth in its texture.

Alex shrugged, the movement tight in his shoulders. “She’s old, Benji. Her eyes aren’t what they used to be.” It was the same excuse he’d given himself, the same one he’d offered his mom when she’d mentioned Mrs. Gable’s frantic call to the station yesterday. A man, she’d insisted, standing by her rose bushes in the dead of night, looking just like her late husband, Arthur. A man who then simply… faded away.
