The afternoon sun, usually a comforting balm on the skin, felt strangely oppressive. It beat down on Main Street, illuminating dust motes dancing in the thick, humid air, but it offered no warmth, no solace. Instead, it seemed to cast a harsh, revealing light on the growing unease that had settled over Oakhaven like a shroud. Alex Carter, leaning against the peeling paint of the old hardware store, watched the familiar faces of his neighbors pass by, and for the first time, a flicker of doubt, cold and sharp, pricked at him.

Benji, perpetually fidgeting, kicked at a loose pebble on the sidewalk. “You feel it, right?” he whispered, his voice barely audible above the distant drone of a lawnmower. “It’s like… everyone’s holding their breath.”

Alex nodded, his gaze fixed on Mrs. Gable, who was meticulously adjusting a display of gardening tools in her shop window. Her movements were precise, almost robotic. He’d seen her yesterday, her face etched with a worry that seemed too deep for a misplaced pet or a late delivery. Today, she looked… vacant.
