The cicadas buzzed their relentless summer song, a sound that had once been the soundtrack to carefree days and endless evenings. Now, it felt like a thrumming under the skin, a constant reminder of the silence that had fallen in its wake. Alex sat on the porch steps, the splintered wood rough beneath his palms, his gaze fixed on the empty street. Benji was beside him, a knot of nervous energy even in stillness, his fingers tracing the condensation rings on his sweating glass of lemonade.

“It’s… quiet,” Benji finally whispered, the word barely audible above the drone of the insects.

Alex nodded, the gesture stiff. Quiet, yes. But it was a hollow quiet, an absence that screamed louder than any noise. The town of Havenwood had exhaled a collective breath, a shaky sigh of relief that had rippled through its fractured heart. The disappearances had stopped. The whispers of familiar voices in empty rooms had faded. The terrifying doppelgängers had retreated back into the shadows from whence they came. For now.
