Confronting the Faceless

Alex and Benji confront Copycat. Its shifting form makes it impossible to fight directly. They must use the knowledge they've gained to expose its true weakness or lure it into a trap.

The air in the old town hall hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from dust motes dancing in the weak shafts of light and the palpable fear that had settled over Havenwood like a shroud. Alex felt it prickling on his skin, a constant, unwelcome reminder of the impossible reality they’d stumbled into. Beside him, Benji’s knuckles were white where he gripped Alex’s arm, his breath coming in shallow, rapid gasps. They stood in the center of the cavernous room, the same place where, just days ago, Sheriff Brody had stood, his voice a gruff, reassuring rumble that now seemed like a distant, naive dream.

The silence was a living thing, broken only by the frantic thumping of their own hearts and the distant, mournful creak of the old building settling. Alex scanned the room, his eyes darting from the peeling paint on the walls to the silent, imposing portraits of past mayors staring down with glassy indifference. This was it. The place where the town’s history, its secrets, its very soul, was supposed to reside. The place where they hoped to find the answer, the weakness, the *anything* that could stop the thing that had been stalking their town, wearing the faces of their loved ones.

“It has to be here,” Alex whispered, his voice barely a breath. “Everything in the library pointed to this town hall. The founder’s journals, the old town records… they all mentioned the ‘Gathering of Shadows’ that took place here.”
