For decades, it had been the heart of Harmony Creek, the stage for summer concerts, Fourth of July speeches, and countless first kisses. Now, it was a place of hushed dread, a focal point for the growing terror that had begun to infest the town like a creeping vine. The air, usually thick with the scent of honeysuckle and freshly cut grass, was now heavy with an unspoken anxiety, a collective holding of breath.
Alex felt it acutely, a knot tightening in his stomach as he and Benji circled the square. The late afternoon sun cast long, distorted shadows, making familiar shapes seem alien and menacing. Even the cheerful chimes of the town hall clock, usually a comforting sound, now seemed to toll with a somber finality.
“Are you sure this is where it’ll be?” Benji’s voice was a tight whisper, his eyes darting nervously at every flicker of movement, every rustle of leaves. He clutched Alex’s arm, his knuckles white.
