While investigating an abandoned building tied to the town's history, Alex and Benji find a clue—a symbol or artifact—that hints at Copycat's true nature or weakness.
The air in the old Blackwood Mill hung thick and still, a stagnant breath of dust and decay. Sunlight, strained through grimy panes, painted weak stripes across the warped floorboards, illuminating motes dancing in the gloom. Alex pushed open a creaking door, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the cavernous space. Benji, ever at his side, flinched, his hand instinctively reaching for Alex’s arm.
“Easy, Benji,” Alex murmured, his voice low. The mill had been abandoned for decades, a skeletal remains of the town’s industrial past, and whispered to be a place of ill repute even before that. It was also, according to the hushed tales Alex had pieced together, connected to the town’s forgotten history, the very history that seemed to be reawakening in their quiet summer.
They moved through the main hall, their footsteps muffled by a carpet of detritus. Broken machinery lay like sleeping giants, rusted and forgotten. A faint, metallic tang, like old blood or pennies, pricked at Alex’s senses. He tried to shake it off. This place was just old, he told himself. Old and sad.
