The air in the small gallery buzzed with the hushed reverence of patrons admiring Elara’s newest pieces. It was a symphony of color and form, each brushstroke a whisper of her recent turmoil, yet presented with a polished grace that belied the chaos beneath. Elara, however, felt as though she were observing it all from a great distance, a ghost in her own life. The familiar phantom ache in her nose throbbed, a dull counterpoint to the polite murmurs. She smoothed the fabric of her dress, a nervous habit she couldn’t quite shake, and forced a smile at Mrs. Gable, a patron known for her discerning eye and even more discerning tongue.

“Exquisite, Elara, truly exquisite,” Mrs. Gable declared, her voice like crinkling parchment. “Though this one,” she gestured with a bejeweled finger towards a canvas depicting a swirling, abstract cityscape, “has a certain disquiet about it. Almost… unsettling.”

Elara’s smile tightened. Unsettling. That was an understatement. The painting was born from a restless night, a jumble of half-formed images that felt both alien and deeply familiar. The ache in her nose intensified, a sharp reminder of the gnawing unease that had become her constant companion. She’d been so focused on the exhibition, on presenting a facade of normalcy, that she’d almost forgotten the other thread pulling at her – the one that led away from the gallery, away from the art, and into the murky depths of her forgotten past.
