The aroma of turpentine and linseed oil, usually a comforting embrace, now felt tinged with an unfamiliar, unsettling sharpness. Elara rubbed her temples, the dull throb behind her eyes resonating with the persistent ache in her nose. It was a strange sensation, a phantom bruise that seemed to deepen with every brushstroke, every flicker of a forgotten image. She was in her studio, the late afternoon sun painting long, golden stripes across the floorboards, illuminating dust motes dancing like tiny, lost spirits. The unfinished canvas on her easel, a swirling vortex of blues and greys, seemed to mock her with its own chaotic energy.
She’d been trying to capture the feeling of a dream, the elusive quality of something glimpsed just at the edge of consciousness. But lately, her dreams felt less like fleeting phantoms and more like intrusive guests, leaving behind unsettling imprints. The photograph, tucked away in that hidden compartment, had only amplified the unease. A young woman, her face eerily familiar yet utterly unknown, stood before a vast, imposing building Elara couldn't place. And the ache in her nose, that peculiar, phantom pain, had flared the moment her fingers brushed against the aged paper.
A soft knock at the studio door startled her. Her heart gave a little leap. No one ever knocked so gently. Hesitantly, she called out, "Come in?"
