The air in Finch’s opulent study felt thick, almost syrupy, clinging to Elara’s skin like damp velvet. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, seemed to struggle through the heavy damask curtains, casting long, distorted shadows that danced with the nervous tremor in her own hands. Beside her, Detective Corbin stood like a granite statue, his presence a silent anchor in the swirling uncertainty. He’d been unusually quiet on the drive over, his usual gruff pragmatism replaced by a watchful stillness that Elara found both reassuring and unnerving.

Across from them, Dr. Alistair Finch sat behind his imposing mahogany desk, his silver hair gleaming under the muted light. He offered a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, a practiced gesture of concern that Elara now saw through with painful clarity. Beside him, a woman Elara vaguely recognized from Finch’s occasional mentions – a colleague, he’d once said, someone who specialized in ‘memory recalibration’ – sat with her hands clasped, her expression unreadable.

“Elara, my dear,” Finch began, his voice smooth as polished oak. “You look… troubled. Detective Corbin assures me you’ve been experiencing some rather vivid episodes. We’re all here to help, you know.”
