The air in the Archivist’s sanctuary was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something like dried herbs and forgotten secrets. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that managed to penetrate the gloom, illuminating stacks of books that seemed to lean precariously against each other, as if sharing hushed conversations. Elara’s heart thrummed a nervous rhythm against her ribs, a familiar counterpoint to the dull throb in her nose. She clutched the worn leather satchel tighter, its contents – the fragmented journal pages, the faded photograph, the single, chipped ceramic shard – feeling both impossibly heavy and frustratingly inadequate.

The Archivist, a figure shrouded in shadow and mystery, sat behind a vast, cluttered desk. Their face was a landscape of wrinkles, etched deep by time and, Elara suspected, by the weight of countless stories. Their eyes, when they finally met hers, were sharp and ancient, like polished obsidian.

“You have brought the pieces,” the Archivist’s voice was a low murmur, a rustle of dry leaves. It wasn’t a question.
