Chapter 13
Corbin's Choice
Detective Corbin, presented with concrete evidence or witnessing Elara's genuine distress, begins to believe her. He must choose between his duty and helping Elara expose a conspiracy that reaches further than he imagined.
Detective Corbin stood at the threshold of Elara Vance's studio, the scent of turpentine and linseed oil a stark contrast to the sterile air of his precinct. He’d arrived, he told himself, to follow up on a routine report of a disturbance, a neighbor’s complaint about late-night noises. But the knot in his stomach, a familiar companion when a case felt… off, told him otherwise. He’d seen Elara’s art before, sketches and canvases that pulsed with a raw, untamed energy. Now, standing amidst the controlled chaos of her creative space, he felt the palpable weight of her recent distress.
Elara herself was a study in fragility, her eyes, usually bright and full of a fierce artistic fire, were shadowed with exhaustion. Her hand, Elara’s hand, the one that conjured worlds onto canvas, trembled slightly as she gestured for him to enter. The ache in her nose, the phantom throb that had become a constant, unwelcome guest, seemed to pulse in time with Corbin’s own unease. He’d dismissed her initial pleas for help as the ramblings of an artist under pressure, a creative mind unraveling. But the photograph she’d thrust into his hand at their last, almost accidental, encounter—a faded image of a younger Elara, standing before a building that felt both alien and eerily familiar—had planted a seed of doubt. And then there were the inconsistencies, the hushed whispers he’d overheard, the way certain people seemed to vanish from conversations when he approached.
“Thank you for coming, Detective,” Elara’s voice was soft, almost a whisper, laced with a weariness that went beyond mere fatigue. She’d been crying, he could tell, the faint redness around her eyes a testament to it. He’d seen her distress before, but this was different. This was the raw, unvarnished pain of someone staring into an abyss.
