The air in the cavern was thick with the metallic tang of blood and the acrid bite of ozone, a perfume of conflict that clung to Ahrayatan’s armor. He stood amidst a tableau of fallen Semagan warriors, their obsidian armor rent and their alien forms sprawled in grotesque stillness. Each breath he drew was a testament to his prowess, a silent hymn to the god within that had guided his blade. But the victory, so absolute, felt hollow. Ahtawan was still gone.
“Where is he?” Ahrayatan’s voice, usually a thunderclap that could shake mountains, was a low growl, a predator’s plea. He seized the arm of a fallen Semagan, his grip like a vise, the creature’s desiccated skin cracking under the pressure. The Semagan’s vacant eyes stared, unseeing, at the cavern roof. “Speak!”
The Semagan offered no response, its silence a mockery of Ahrayatan’s rage. Tamaton, his face etched with a weariness that belied his years, stepped forward, his hand gently resting on Ahrayatan’s mailed forearm. “Brother, there is nothing more to be gained here. We have searched every corner. They did not fight to the last to protect him. They fought to delay us.”
