A Storm on the Horizon
The afternoon sky turns the color of bruised plums. Sheriff Walker’s voice crackles over the radio in the grocery, calm but carrying an edge that makes people pause. 'River's coming up fast. Secure your livestock and move to higher ground.' Billy stands on the porch, watching clouds churn like milk stirred in dark tea. The air thickens with humidity and the smell of wet earth. Mama Annie comes out, wiping her hands on her apron, and she looks at the sky with a knowing that tightens his stomach. The town’s people emerge from their houses, carrying boxes, leading children, their faces grim. Billy feels the heart of Rodney Mississippi begin to beat faster, a collective breath held against the coming thunder.

The air had gone thick and still, heavy with humidity and the smell of wet earth rising from the fields beyond the town’s edge.
From inside the grocery, Sheriff Walker’s voice crackled over the radio, calm but carrying an edge that made people pause in the aisles. “River’s coming up fast. Secure your livestock and move to higher ground. I repeat—this is not a drill. Get to high ground.”
Billy’s stomach tightened. He’d heard that voice plenty of times before, calling out greetings or warnings or idle gossip, but never like this. Never with that quiet hum underneath, like a wire pulled taut.
