Chapter 18

A New Way to Learn

Miss Edna announces that Billy will teach the next history lesson. The class stirs, confused. Billy’s palms sweat. At the front, he unrolls a long sheet of paper covered in drawings: the first ferry, the old gristmill, the flood of ’45, the day the church bell was raised. He points to each image, stumbling over words, but the pictures speak. The other children lean in, seeing the town through his eyes. When he stutters, Miss Edna just nods, patient. A boy asks a question about the mill, and Billy’s hands trace the gears on the drawing. The understanding is mutual. He is teaching them the town’s secret language, and they are learning to listen.
