Chapter 17

The Town's Heart

Billy begins to walk through Rodney with new eyes. He notices the way the morning sun catches the church’s weather vane, the crack in the sidewalk that looks like a river, the gnarled roots of the old oak that generations have climbed. Every broken fence, every painted shutter, every porch step tells a story. He hears the town’s pulse in the clang of the blacksmith’s hammer, the hum of the mill, the laughter of children playing jacks. He feels his own heartbeat sync with it. This is his home, not because he was born here, but because he sees it. He begins to draw it all, not for approval, but because the town asks to be seen through his eyes.

The morning came soft and slow, like it was waiting for Billy to catch up. He stood on the front porch of the little house on Sycamore Street, watching the sun climb over the rooftops of Rodney. The air smelled of dew and woodsmoke and the faint sweetness of honeysuckle that grew wild along the fence line. Mama was still inside, humming a hymn while she washed the breakfast dishes, and Billy felt a quiet kind of peace settle over him.

He had passed that church a thousand times, maybe more, but he had never noticed how the rooster's tail feathers curled just so, or how the arrow beneath it pointed always east, no matter which way the wind blew. He pulled a stub of pencil from his pocket and a crumpled piece of paper he had saved from Miss Edna's desk. He drew the rooster, quick and rough, but true. The lines felt right in his hand.
