Chapter 15
Sheriff's Offer
Sheriff Walker finds Billy at the town’s notice board, a peeling cork surface pinned with faded posters. 'I need someone to keep this board in shape,' the sheriff says, his voice gruff, not asking but stating. Billy nods, a small movement that expands into a promise. He takes down the old flyers, cleans the pushpins, and begins anew. He draws a picture of the town square and pins it at the center—a simple sketch of the courthouse, the church, the river bending past. It is his first official contribution, a mark that he belongs. He steps back, wiping dust from his hands, and feels a new kind of pride: the quiet pride of being useful.
Sheriff Walker found Billy at the town’s notice board the next morning, just as the sun was beginning to burn the fog off the river. Billy was on his knees, prying loose a rusty thumbtack with his fingernails. He had already cleared one whole corner, and the pile of old paper at his feet looked like autumn leaves. He worked slowly, carefully, as if each scrap deserved its own farewell.
“You’re at it early,” Sheriff Walker said, his boots crunching on the gravel as he approached.
