The air in the Forgotten Grove had always held a certain weight, a stillness that settled deep into my bones. But now, it felt heavier, charged with an unspoken energy that hummed beneath the moss-laden earth. Klaus’s words, or rather, the silence that followed them, had done more than just rattle my composure; they had begun to unravel the very fabric of my understanding. He stood before me, a silhouette against the deepening twilight, his eyes, those ancient pools of amethyst, fixed on mine with an intensity that both unnerved and compelled.

“My fascination with your family, Elara,” he’d begun, his voice a low murmur that seemed to resonate from the ancient oaks themselves, “it stretches back further than you can imagine.” He paused, as if sifting through a vast library of memories, his gaze drifting towards the gnarled roots of a particularly old willow. “There was a time, long before your mother was born, when the veil between worlds was thinner here. The grove… it held a certain power, and those who understood it, those who were *part* of it, were bound by ancient pacts.”

A chill that had nothing to do with the evening air snaked up my spine. Pacts? Bound? The words felt like stones dropped into the still waters of my grief, sending ripples of dread through me. “What pacts?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper, afraid to break the fragile spell of his confession.
