The air in the Forgotten Grove held a different kind of stillness now, not the quiet of absence, but the charged hush of anticipation. It had been a week since I’d first returned, a week of wandering through familiar paths that felt both mine and alien. Each rustle of leaves, each shift of light through the ancient canopy, seemed to whisper secrets I was only beginning to decipher. Klaus, the man who was no longer just a man in my eyes, had been my constant companion. His presence was a balm and a riddle, his ancient eyes holding a depth that mirrored the grove itself.
We sat by the stream, its water a silver ribbon winding through moss-covered stones. The setting sun painted the western sky in hues of bruised plum and molten gold, a spectacle I’d once shared with my mother, her laughter a melody carried on the breeze. Now, the silence of her absence was a heavy cloak, yet Klaus’s quiet presence somehow lessened its weight. He hadn’t pressed me for details of my grief, but his understanding was a language spoken in shared gazes and the gentle brush of his hand against mine.
“You are drawn to this place, Elara,” he said, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. He used my real name, a privilege he’d earned through shared whispers and stolen moments. “It calls to you, doesn’t it?”
