The air in the village square hung thick with the scent of woodsmoke and something else, something wild and earthy that tickled the back of my throat. It was a smell I’d always known, a smell that was as much a part of me as the beat of my own heart, yet today, it felt amplified, charged with an unspoken significance. The elders, their faces etched with the stories of countless seasons, sat in a circle beneath the gnarled baobab tree, their voices a low murmur, a drone that seemed to weave itself into the very fabric of the afternoon. I found myself drawn to them, a moth to a flame, the antique locket nestled against my skin a cool, insistent weight.

Nyamwaya had warned me. Not in words, not directly, but in the flicker of his eyes, the subtle tension in his shoulders whenever the elders gathered. He had a way of communicating without speaking, a language woven from shared glances and the unspoken understanding that passed between us like a current. Today, his gaze had been particularly intense, a silent plea for caution, for awareness.

As I approached, the murmur of their voices hushed, and all eyes turned to me. A knot of apprehension tightened in my stomach.
