Fragments of memory, triggered by the locket and Nyamwaya's presence, begin to coalesce. Lynne sees glimpses of faces, hears echoes of laughter, and feels a profound sense of loss.
The locket, cool against my skin, pulsed with a faint warmth, a silent thrumming that vibrated through my veins and into the very marrow of my bones. It was a familiar sensation now, a constant companion since its discovery, yet it never failed to stir a disquiet within me. Today, however, the disquiet was a tempest, a churning sea of half-formed images and forgotten whispers. Nyamwaya sat across from me, his gaze steady, yet it felt as though he too was a conduit to this internal storm.
We were on the edge of the whispering woods, the late afternoon sun casting long, skeletal shadows that danced with the wind. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a perfume that always seemed to echo the scent of my dreams. “It’s stronger today,” I murmured, my fingers tracing the intricate, worn patterns on the locket’s surface.
Nyamwaya nodded, his eyes, the colour of storm clouds on the horizon, fixed on my face. “The threads are beginning to weave,” he said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate in harmony with the locket. “You feel it, don’t you? The pull.”
