The familiar chill of the evening air, usually a comfort, felt like a shroud against my skin. I sat by the window, the locket cool and smooth between my fingers, its intricate carvings a silent testament to a history I couldn't grasp. The dreams, oh, the dreams. They were a constant, a relentless tide pulling me away from the shore of my waking life. Today, they had been particularly potent, a whirlwind of faces I didn't know, places I'd never seen, yet felt as familiar as my own breath. And always, there was the echo of a melody, a mournful lament that seemed to resonate from the very core of my being.

Then, he appeared. Nyamwaya. He stood on the edge of the clearing, silhouetted against the dying embers of the sun. He hadn't announced himself, no rustle of leaves, no snap of a twig. I rose, drawn by an invisible thread, my heart a hummingbird trapped in my chest. The locket, still in my hand, felt warmer now, as if acknowledging his arrival.
