The air in the grove, once thick with the scent of damp earth and ancient secrets, now felt thin, almost brittle. It clung to Lynne’s skin like a shroud, a tangible weight pressing down on her chest. The stone, cool and smooth beneath her fingertips, hummed with a low, persistent vibration, a resonance that echoed not just in the grove, but deep within her own bones. It was a melody she had heard before, in the hushed corridors of her dreams, a lullaby sung in a language she didn’t understand but felt in the very marrow of her being.

The guardian, a figure carved from shadow and silence, had receded, melting back into the gnarled roots and moss-laden branches of the elder trees. Its departure had left a void, a stillness that amplified the turmoil raging within Lynne. The chamber, or what remained of it, was nothing more than a hollowed-out space within the earth, illuminated by the faint, ethereal glow emanating from the stone itself. Glyphs, like frozen lightning, writhed across its surface, shifting and reforming with a subtle, mesmerising grace. They spoke of a time before time, of a lineage that stretched back through the mists of forgotten ages, of a destiny woven into the very fabric of existence.

The locket, nestled in the palm of her hand, felt impossibly heavy. Its brass surface, dulled by centuries, seemed to absorb the faint light, holding its own secrets within its intricate carvings. It was a key, the guardian had said, a bridge. A bridge to what? To whom? The fragmented visions from her dreams coalesced, sharpening into focus. A woman’s face, etched with sorrow and fierce determination. A battlefield, shrouded in mist and the clash of steel. A whispered promise, carried on the wind. These were not mere figments of imagination; they were echoes, faint but undeniable, of a life lived, a love lost, a duty unfulfilled.
