The air in the small hut, usually thick with the scent of drying herbs and the faint, comforting aroma of woodsmoke, felt charged, taut like a bowstring drawn to its limit. Outside, the night had settled, a velvet cloak studded with indifferent stars, but inside, a different kind of darkness was unfurling, one born not of absence but of revelation. Nyamwaya sat opposite me, his face, usually a mask of inscrutable calm, was etched with an intensity I’d never witnessed. The lamplight flickered, casting dancing shadows that seemed to mimic the turmoil I felt churning within.

I clutched the locket, its cool metal a familiar anchor against the rising tide of apprehension. It had led me here, to this quiet hut, to this man whose presence had been a constant, unsettling hum in the background of my life, a melody of mystery I’d been both drawn to and wary of. He had appeared like a phantom at the Ajus’ dance, his gaze locking with mine, a silent recognition that had sent shivers down my spine. Since then, his words had been riddles, his actions laced with an unspoken understanding of the visions that plagued my sleep.
