Chapter 5
A Serpent's Kiss
A shocking betrayal from someone Kwame trusted shatters his world. He confronts the devastating cost of his ambition and the perilous reality of his relationships.
The air in the cramped study hung thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something acrid and unsettling, like burnt sugar and regret. Kwame traced the faded ink of the map, his breath catching in his throat. The last clue, a riddle etched onto a brittle parchment tucked within his grandfather’s worn leather journal, had led him here, to this forgotten room in his family’s ancestral home. He had expected a triumphant surge, a confirmation of his impending fortune. Instead, a cold dread had begun to seep into his bones, far more potent than any fear he’d faced in the treacherous jungles or shadowed ruins.

The stained-glass window above the fireplace, depicting a weeping moon goddess, cast fragmented, melancholic light across the dusty floorboards. It all pointed to this room, this very spot.
A floorboard creaked behind him. Kwame spun around, his heart hammering against his ribs. Amina stood in the doorway, a gentle smile gracing her lips, her eyes wide with concern. She held a silver tray, a steaming mug of her signature ginger tea perched precariously on its edge.
