Chapter 9
A Prince's Dilemma
King Mathias urges Mihail towards an alliance against Marishka's people. Mihail is torn between his father's command and his heart's undeniable pull towards the sorceress.
The weight of my father's words pressed down on me like the stone battlements of Poenari itself. Each syllable, a hammer blow against the fragile edifice of my heart. He sat across from me in the royal solar, the firelight glinting off the polished oak of the table, his gaze as unyielding as the mountain peaks that guarded our kingdom. "Mihail," he’d begun, his voice grave, "the reports are undeniable. The sorceress, Marishka, her people are preparing for war. We cannot stand idly by. An alliance with the northern lords is our only recourse. We must strike first."
I’d nodded, feigning a compliance that felt like a betrayal of my very soul. How could I explain that the woman who was poised to be our enemy was the very reason my own heart beat a frantic, forbidden rhythm? I saw her in my mind's eye, her crimson hair a wildfire against the moon’s pale indifference, her obsidian steed a creature of midnight. And I, astride my white mare, clad in the stark purity of my lineage, felt the impossible pull of her darkness, a siren song that threatened to drown me.
"But Father," I began, my voice raspy, "the sorceress's people are not a unified enemy. There are those who would seek peace. And Marishka… she is more than just a sorceress. She is…" I trailed off, the words catching in my throat. How could I articulate the depth of my feelings without sounding like a fool, a prince bewitched by a woman of dark magic?
