Chapter 7
Divided Loyalties
Marishka and Mihail's secret meetings become more perilous. Their opposing loyalties to their people and houses create an ever-widening chasm between them.
The air in the shadowed glen was thick with the scent of damp earth and the unspoken words that hung between us like a shroud. Each stolen moment, each whispered promise beneath the indifferent gaze of the moon, felt like a fragile bloom pressed between the pages of a forbidden book. The obsidian silk of my tunic, usually a comfort, now felt like a mark, a banner of the darkness that separated me from the pristine white of Mihail’s noble house. My gaze flickered to the jagged peaks of Poenari Castle, a silent sentinel against the bruised twilight sky. It was a constant reminder of the chasm that yawned between our worlds, a chasm carved by generations of blood and suspicion. “And yet, it does,” I replied, my voice barely a breath. “For how long, I cannot say.”
