Lord Batharus's Shadow

The chill of the night air, usually a balm against the inferno that sometimes raged within me, offered no solace. His own steed was a creature of sleek, midnight black, its eyes like chips of obsidian, mirroring the darkness that clung to its master. Batharus himself was a figure of imposing presence, his dark velvet doublet embroidered with silver thread that seemed to writhe like serpents in the dying light. His face, when he finally turned it towards the castle, was a study in sharp angles and predatory grace, a smile that promised nothing but ruin.

He was here, I knew it, for the same reason I feared he would be. He sensed the shift in the winds, the growing unease that preceded a storm.
