The air, once thick with the stench of fear and smoke, now carried the faint, sweet perfume of bruised blossoms and damp earth. It was a scent of mending, a tentative sigh of a land that had bled and now, slowly, began to heal. The jagged teeth of Poenari Castle, silhouetted against a sky scrubbed clean by the recent tempest, seemed less menacing, their shadows softened by the gentle caress of the returning sun. My crimson hair, a wildfire I had once feared, now felt like a banner of survival, a reminder of the inferno we had weathered.

We walked the castle grounds, Mihail and I, our hands finding each other with a familiar, comforting pressure. His fingers, usually so steady and sure, still bore the faint tremors of the battle he had faced, the weight of his crown a tangible thing even when it rested on his father’s head. The pristine white of his tunic, once a stark emblem of the order he represented, now seemed to hold the ghost of dust and blood, a testament to his own courage.

“The healers say the fever is breaking in the lower villages,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble against the quietude. “The wounded… they are out of immediate danger.”
