The Heart's Reckoning
Mihail must choose. Will he stand with his kingdom, or defy duty for the woman he loves? His decision will seal the fate of Poenari and his own soul.
The air in the King’s solar was thick with the scent of beeswax and old parchment, a suffocating perfume that clung to my skin like a shroud. Outside, the wind howled a mournful dirge around Poenari’s stone battlements, a prelude to the storm that raged not only in the heavens but within the gilded cage of my heart. Father’s face, etched with the weariness of a thousand battles, was turned towards the roaring hearth, the flickering flames casting dancing shadows that mimicked the turmoil in his eyes. He had spoken of the encroaching darkness, of the encroaching armies, of the desperate need for a unified front. But his words, meant to steel my resolve, felt like stones dropped into a bottomless well.
“Mihail,” his voice, raspy with age and concern, broke the oppressive silence. “The envoys from the northern territories await your decision. They pledge allegiance, but their terms are… steep.”
I traced the intricate carvings on the armrest of my chair, my gaze fixed on a point beyond the fire, beyond the castle walls, beyond the very horizon. Steep. A fitting word for the precipice upon which I now stood. Every fiber of my being screamed for me to turn away, to flee this suffocating chamber and the weight of my lineage. But the memory of Marishka’s hand, warm and trembling in mine, anchored me, a dangerous, intoxicating anchor.
