The air in the hidden glen, usually a sanctuary of hushed secrets and moon-drenched silence, crackled with an unnatural tension. It was a stillness that preceded a storm, a breath held too long. My heart, a frantic bird trapped within my ribs, beat a frantic rhythm against the silk of my gown. Mihail’s hand, warm and steady, was a beacon in the encroaching darkness. We had met here countless times, stolen moments under the watchful gaze of the ancient oaks, our hushed words a defiant whisper against the brewing war. But tonight, the silence was different. It was heavy, pregnant with unspoken dread.

“Marishka,” Mihail’s voice, a low rumble, broke the stillness. His eyes, pools of starlight in the dim light, searched mine. “Something is wrong.”

I nodded, my throat tight. I had felt it too, a tremor in the very earth, a discord in the ancient magic that pulsed through my veins. It was the creeping chill of betrayal, a scent far fouler than any battlefield. “The whispers have grown louder, Mihail. Not of war between our peoples, but of something… deeper. A rot from within.”
