Chapter 7

Chapter 7 — The Drawer That Opens Itself

Weeks after his apparent resolution, Rolandas finds the quiet he achieved beginning to erode under the weight of ordinary days. A chance encounter with Marius at a hardware store forces him to see Regina's present life from a new angle. Zvonkus notices Rolandas slipping back into old patterns and confronts him with characteristic bluntness. Elena shares a difficult chapter from her novel that mirrors a truth Rolandas has been avoiding: that acceptance and surrender are not the same thing. Rolandas returns home and, without ceremony, opens the drawer he has been refusing to touch—finding not revelation but emptiness, which unsettles him more than any object could have.

Not dramatically. Not the way it had before, when nostalgia swelled the walls and made every corner feel like a stage. This was different. A slow contraction. The ceiling lower by millimeters. The air slightly thicker, as though the apartment itself were holding its breath on his behalf and growing tired of the effort.
