Chapter 5
The Road to Kaunas
Elena and Lina travel to Kaunas to find the bookstore from Ona's postcard. They meet the elderly owner who remembers Ona and reveals that she lived quietly in the city, working at the shop until her death. The owner gives them a sealed envelope Ona left for anyone who came asking about her past. The chapter ends with Elena and Lina opening the envelope on the bus home, finding a letter that explains Ona's final decision to never return.
The morning bus arrived at the village square at half past seven, its engine rumbling like an old farmer clearing his throat. Elena stood with Lina at the stop, each carrying a small bag. Jonas had driven them in his truck, the rusted bed clattering over the cobblestones. He stepped out to see them off, leaning against the hood with his arms crossed.
"You have the address?" he asked.
Elena patted her coat pocket. "Rotušės aikštė 5. Senoji knygynas."
