Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The Chant of Recollection
Trapped in the chapel with Jonas and Viktorija, Agnė faces the chanting outside. They discover a hidden passage behind the altar, leading to a basement where old sect documents are stored. Viktorija reveals she has been searching for Jonas for years. The chanting grows louder; they find a way out through a tunnel, but emerge into a clearing where former sect members await. The chapter ends with a figure stepping forward, claiming to be the one who locked them in.
Agnė pressed her palm against the cold wood of the chapel door. It did not give. The lock was old, but solid—a heavy iron mechanism that had held for decades. She pushed again, harder, and felt only the immovable weight of the door. Behind her, Viktorija let out a breath that was almost a laugh. “Well. This is not how I expected my evening to go.”
Jonas stood motionless near the altar, his head tilted as though listening to something beyond the walls. The low hum from outside had grown into a discernible rhythm—voices, many of them, rising and falling in a chant that Agnė recognized with a cold shudder. It was the same chant from the old farmhouse, the one they had used to begin their gatherings. The words were in a language she had never fully understood, a mix of archaic Lithuanian and something invented, something Jonas had called the “tongue of the new dawn.”
“They’re here,” Jonas said, his voice flat. “The faithful.”
