I had made an altar of absence.

The knitting lay abandoned on the floor below. I had pulled out rows of stitches in the night, unable to bear the pattern I had chosen. Now, a single thread wound through my fingers, a warm red that reminded me of blood, of life, of the heart that had beaten so hard for Alex. But the heart had grown tired. The obsession was a garment I had knitted too tightly, and it had begun to choke me.
