The snow came down in a slow, deliberate curtain, blurring the edges of the streetlights into soft halos of amber. I stood at the kitchen window, my breath fogging the glass, and watched the flakes settle on the brittle grass, covering the dead patches where summer had once been careless with its green. The kettle whistled behind me, a sharp, insistent cry, but I didn’t move. I was caught in the geometry of the storm, the way each flake seemed to find its place without question, without the heavy labor of choice.

My hands were cold. I had forgotten my gloves somewhere—at the market, perhaps, or on the bus, or in that café where I had sat for an hour, staring at a cup of tea I never drank. Loss had become a habit, a quiet erosion of small things: keys, receipts, the thread of a conversation. I was unraveling, stitch by stitch, and the pattern I had once known so well was now a tangle of loose ends.

I poured the water into the cup, watching the steam rise and disappear. The tea bag floated, a small brown island in a sea of heat. I didn’t stir it. I let it steep on its own, a passive act in a life that demanded I be active, decisive, present. But presence was a luxury I could no longer afford. My mind was a room of half-finished thoughts, each one a door that opened onto another corridor of uncertainty.
