The late afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across Elara’s small, determinedly green patch of earth. It was a Saturday, the kind that promised rest but felt more like a slow, persistent ache in her bones. The soil, once a stubborn, compacted clay, now yielded a little more readily under her trowel, but the progress felt agonizingly slow. Weeds, those tenacious invaders, still managed to sprout with alarming speed, mocking her efforts. She’d spent hours yesterday battling a particularly aggressive patch of bindweed, her fingers raw, her spirit flagging. The little sprouts of lettuce and radishes, so full of promise just days ago, seemed to be wilting under the relentless, unseasonably warm spring sun, their delicate leaves curling inward as if in surrender. Elara sighed, wiping a bead of sweat from her brow with the back of a dirt-stained hand. The initial surge of enthusiasm, the heady thrill of planting those first seeds, felt like a distant memory. Now, doubt, a familiar, unwelcome companion, whispered in her ear, its voice low and insidious.

A place for neighbors to connect, to share the bounty of the earth, to bring a little life and color back to this concrete corner of the city. But the reality was proving far more demanding than the vision. The soil was poor, the water supply unreliable, and the initial interest from the community, while polite, had been lukewarm at best. The Skeptic’s pronouncements, though not overtly cruel, had been laced with a heavy dose of “I told you so,” and Elara felt the weight of that unspoken certainty pressing down on her.
