Chapter 7: The Guide and the Guardian
Kaelen and Mira scout the corrupted village, deepening their bond as Mira shares her grandmother's legacy and proves her resourcefulness. They discover the shadow's source and plan a rescue, while the egg begins to hatch back at the cave.
The wind carried the smell of smoke and something else—something sour, like milk left too long in the sun. Kaelen stood at the cave entrance, adjusting the strap on his leather satchel. Behind him, Ignis snorted, a plume of steam rising from his nostrils. The dragon's eyes were fixed on the distant spires, the Grayfang Spires, where the fourth ember waited.
“I’m coming with you.”
Kaelen turned. Mira stood in the cave mouth, arms crossed, her silver eyes defiant. She’d cleaned up a little—Lyra had given her a spare tunic and a comb—but she still looked like she’d been dragged through a hedge backward.
