The morning light crept over the mountains like a slow yawn, stretching gold across the peaks. Kaelen stood at the cave entrance, watching the horizon with the same intensity he’d given the embers the night before. Laura stood beside him, her bow in hand, her gray eyes tracking the tree line with a hunter’s patience.
“You don’t have to come,” he said, for the third time.
“You keep saying that like it’ll change my mind.” She didn’t look at him. “I’m coming.”
