The sanctuary came into view just as the last light bled from the sky. Kaelen’s boots were still damp, his lungs still burning from the lake, but he didn’t slow down. Ignis soared overhead, casting a flickering shadow across the path. Grit ran ahead, barking at nothing in particular—or maybe at everything, as was his custom.
Mira stumbled behind him, the hatchling—Luma, she’d taken to calling it—tucked into her sling. “If I die,” she gasped, “I’m haunting you. Specifically. I’ll rattle pots in your kitchen forever.”
“Noted,” Kaelen said. “But you’re not dying tonight. We’ve got work.”
