The Price of Hope
Tee uses her mother's journal to escape Lady Elephant Legs and Lucian, but the battle leaves her wounded. She gives birth to Keira in hiding, but Sam (Lucian) tracks her down and takes the baby after a setup. Years pass; Tee moves to a new town, meets Flanan, and they have a son, Asher, whose calming presence brings her peace. Tee never forgets Keira and holds onto hope that she will return.
The journal’s pages hummed beneath Tee’s fingers, the ink shimmering like liquid starlight. She had read the words a hundred times, but now they seemed to lift from the parchment, threading through the air in ribbons of pale gold. Her mother’s voice—lost for so many years—rose in her chest like a forgotten lullaby, and Tee understood, at last, what she had to do.
She spoke the words aloud.
The cabin shuddered. The willow tree outside lashed its branches against the windows, and the wind tore through the yard with a howl that might have been rage or grief. Lady Elephant Legs stood at the threshold, her enormous legs planted like ancient oaks, her face a mask of fury carved from stone. Behind her, Sam—Lucian—watched with those silver eyes that had once promised Tee a home and now held only cold possession.
