The secret Andrew and Jessica were hiding is revealed, causing a massive scandal. Ash finds herself caught in the crossfire, the accidental catalyst for a much larger, more complex drama.
The air in the crowded cafe was thick with the clatter of ceramic on saucer and the murmur of a hundred conversations, a symphony of normalcy that felt utterly alien to Ash. She nursed a lukewarm latte, the foam art a pathetic, deflated ghost of what it should have been. Across the small, sticky table, Leo, her new, spectacularly eccentric ally, was meticulously dissecting a blueberry muffin with a tiny silver fork usually reserved for escargots. His eyes, magnified behind thick spectacles, darted around the room, cataloging every patron with the intensity of a spy on a mission.
“So,” Leo began, his voice a low, conspiratorial rasp that belied the bright pink of his cardigan, “are we absolutely certain about the pigeon strategy?”
Ash sighed, a puff of air that did little to dislodge the knot of anxiety in her stomach. “Leo, it’s not a pigeon strategy. It’s the ‘accidental’ delivery of a very large, very embarrassing banner to Andrew’s corporate retreat. And yes, I’m certain. If it gets him and Jessica to look like the fools they are, I’ll train a flock of carrier pigeons to deliver love letters from a llama.”
